Native Americans have been settling in the area now known as Falmouth for many centuries. The settlement became known by its current name when the Massachusetts Bay Colony assumed control of Maine in 1658. Farmers and fisherman were the backbone of the community until the end of World War II when Falmouth became increasingly suburban.
